You
have seen the pictures and video clips. You have read the news
of possibly the worst tsunami ever, in terms of lives lost and
total dollar damage. What horrible damage it did. We have all,
from the comfort of our homes, been shocked; and rightly so. This
is the reality of millions in our lifetime today.
The question comes to us all:
Why did this happen?
There are many responses
floating around.
God is judging this world for
its sin and idolatry.
God was being merciful to the
children killed by taking them to Heaven and sparing them from lives of
slavery, abuse, and prostitution.
God is teaching us to be
concerned for others both spiritually, socially, and physically.
God is wanting to draw the
peoples of these lands into a personal relationship with Himself through
the suffering they are experiencing.
God is opening doors of
opportunity for Christians to be salt and light and thus to witness
effectively to those in such dire need.
God is showing us the
fragility of life.
God is demonstrating His power
and giving us a foretaste of what the time of the 7-year Tribulation
period will be like. (If you don't know what the 7-year Tribulation
period is, then, please, contact us and we will be glad to explain this
event to you.)
Actually, there are many other
ideas being put forth out there that are too many to list. However, all of
the above-proposed purposes for this tsunami of 2004 are in line with the
Bible and with God's character.
How does this apply to you and
me?
How are you investing your life
for the Lord? Although we don't yet know the exact death figure from this
disaster, we do know that around 150,000 are estimated to be dead, and
more being found daily.
Where did all these people go
once they stopped breathing: to Heaven or to Hell? In all probability, the
majority went to Hell. So let me ask you again: How are you investing your
life for the Lord?
Are you praying for those
involved in the suffering and aftermath of the tsunami? They need your
prayers? There is widespread hunger, thirst, and need for both clothing
and shelter. And there is widespread spiritual hunger and thirst in their
souls as well. Are you praying for their needs, both physical and
spiritual, to be met? If you were in their shoes, wouldn't you want others
praying for your physical and spiritual needs, too?
Are you praying for the
missionaries and national churches in those lands who are placed there
strategically by God for such a time as this? Are you praying for their
effectiveness in meeting the needs of the people that they might win many
to Christ through this overwhelming catastrophe? Are you praying for the
physical and emotional needs of those laboring in these zones of mass
destruction and continual danger. Disease and plagues are still possible
in the aftermath, and could affect our Christian brethren as well.
Are you seeking for a means of
sending aid to these people? Many lost people are sending millions of
dollars in social aid and showing their pity on these nations. And what
about us as Christians? Shouldn't we who have experienced God's great
mercy be showing mercy to others? Shouldn't we be doing all we can to take
advantage of the open doors to get the blessed Gospel of Christ to these
millions under such duress? Are you sending funds through your local
church to the missionaries you support located in these lands? What is
your church doing? What should you be doing?
Are you witnessing where you
are? Are you leading men and women to the Lord? Are you wisely using your
life in the service of Christ Jesus? Are you striving to win men and women
to Christ now before death claims those around you?
Lastly, could it be that God is
opening your eyes to the spiritual need of the lost around the world? Are
you seeing the spiritual needs of this world like you've never seen
before? Is God tugging at your heart? Is He calling you to give your life
in sacrificial service to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are
in constant, daily danger of perishing and going to a Christless eternity?
SWMI is looking for men and
women who have been called of God to help us reach both the deaf and
hearing of this world for Christ. If you have any questions about how you
can be involved personally, financially, and/or vocationally in world
missions, please, contact our International Missions Director,
David Bennett.
